Course Overview:

Middle School Health aids students in creating a foundation of personal health. Beginning with properly defining health, this course then builds upon basic health practices to emphasize the importance of balance. Attention is given to each of the six dimensions of wellness; namely, physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social, and environmental. Students are taught the skills necessary to improve every aspect of health. They are also encouraged to reflect upon their own personal wellness each week.

Unit 1: Health Choices

  • 1 What is Health?

In this section you will be learning about health and wellness. By the end of this section you should be able to do the following:

  • Understand the World Health Organization’s definition of health
  • Contrast the different stages of the Life Cycle
  • Summarize the functions of the main body systems
  • Explain the difference between controllable and non-controllable risk factors
  • Demonstrate what risk factors and health habits are and how they affect the individual 
  • 2 Decision-Making Skills

In this section you will be learning about stages of change, decision making, and goal setting. By the end of this section you should be able to do the following:

  • Analyze the stages of change model and explain its importance
  • Apply the decision-making model to your life
  • Compose personal goals by using the action plan model

Unit 2: Mental Health

  • 1 Mental Health

In this section you will be learning about mental and emotional health. By the end of this section you should be able to do the following:

  • Distinguish between spiritual, emotional, and intellectual wellness
  • Analyze your own personality
  • Explain Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
  • Classify mental disorders
  • 2 Coping Skills

In this section you will be learning about healthy ways to cope. By the end of this section you should be able to do the following:

  • Distinguish between healthy and unhealthy coping mechanisms
  • Explain when and how to seek help for mental problems
  • Analyze the Stages of Grief
  • 3 Stress & Time Management

In this section you will be learning about managing your time and your stress level. By the end of this section you should be able to do the following:

  • Classify stress, stressors, and the effects of stress as positive or negative
  • Summarize the physical, emotional, mental, and behavioral stress response
  • Select effective stress management techniques
  • Assess appropriate time management techniques 

Unit 3: Social Health

In this section you will be learning about healthy relationships. By the end of this section you should be able to do the following:

  • Distinguish between a healthy and an unhealthy relationship
  • Demonstrate the characteristics of healthy relationships with friends and family
  • Summarize the importance of marriage and the responsibilities of parenthood
  • Explain what abuse is and how to prevent and avoid it

In this section you will be learning about effective communication. By the end of this section you should be able to do the following:

  • Demonstrate effective communication by utilizing proper speaking skills, listening skills, and body language
  • Integrate correct conflict resolution techniques into one’s life

 Unit 4: Personal Fitness

In this section you will be learning about physical activity. By the end of this section you should be able to do the following:

  • Describe the benefits of physical fitness
  • Determine the difference between the various components of physical fitness

  • 2 Nutrition

In this section you will be learning about nutrition. By the end of this section you should be able to do the following:

  • Determine the elements of a proper diet
  • Classify food primarily as carbohydrates, proteins, or fats
  • Identify various elements of food labels
  • 3 Weight Management

In this section you will be learning about changes that take place during adolescence and reproductive health. By the end of this section you should be able to do the following:

  • Illustrate proper weight management techniques
  • Recognize the warning signs of a fad diet
  • Determine the difference between types of eating disorders

Unit 5: Personal Health

  • 1 Disease Transmission & Prevention

In this section you will be learning about infectious disease. By the end of this section you should be able to do the following:

  • Distinguish between the causes of infectious diseases
  • Summarize the characteristics of common STDs
  • Identify how HIV is transmitted, treated, and prevented 
  • 2 Drugs & Alcohol

In this section you will be learning about drugs and alcohol. By the end of this section you should be able to do the following:

  • Identify the harmful effects of substance abuse
  • Understand the negative consequences of tobacco use
  • Classify the types and effects of drugs
  • Explain the risks of e-cigarettes
  • 3 Reproductive Health

In this section you will be learning about changes that take place during adolescence and reproductive health. By the end of this section you should be able to do the following:

  • Examine the changes that occur during adolescence
  • Determine how to practice abstinence
  • List contraceptive methods available

 Unit 6: Health & Safety

  • 1 Consumer & Environmental Wellness

In this section you will be learning about consumer and environmental health. By the end of this section you should be able to do the following:

  • Identify the warning signs of quackery
  • Assess whether health information is valid and from a credible source
  • Tell the difference between different types of health insurance
  • Develop ways to help improve the quality of the air, land, and water
  • 2 Safety & Personal Injury

In this section you will be learning how to prevent injuries and what steps to take in case of an accident. By the end of this section you should be able to do the following:

  • Identify behaviors that can help prevent accidents
  • Implement safety precautions to avoid acts of violence
  • Understand how to respond in emergencies
