Red Comet’s online high school course on ‘English Reading’ that is aligned to Idaho State standards provides students with skills and strategies to improve their vocabulary and their reading comprehension skills. Methods for comprehension repair, creating graphic organizers, and steps to determine the themes and main ideas of literature are emphasized in this core course.
The course allows students to gain phonological awareness skills. Students learn to decode using word parts, syllabication and context. The course emphasizes applying knowledge of roots and word parts to draw inferences about new words. Students are encouraged to gain an understanding of text by creating outlines, notes, annotations, charts, and/or diagrams.
