Course Overview:

Food is fundamental to life. Not only does it feed our bodies, but it's often the centerpiece for family gatherings and social functions with friends. In this course, you will learn all about food including food culture, food history, food safety, and current food trends. You'll also learn about the food service industry and try your hand at preparing some culinary delights. Through hands-on activities and in- depth study of the culinary arts field, this course will help you hone your cooking skills and give you the opportunity to explore careers in this exciting industry.

Required Materials:

  • A digital camera or camera phone
Unit 3:
  • A mug
  • 2 packets of your favorite hot chocolate
  • A gas or electric range
  • 4 tablespoons of flour
  • 2 tablespoons of canola oil
  • 3 tablespoons of water
  • A fork
  • ¼ teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • Handful of chocolate chips
Unit 4:
  • Kitchen mixer
  • 4 room temperature egg whites
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • ½ tsp cream of tartar
  • ½ cup of sugar
Unit 6:
  • Medium-size frying pan
  • Tongs
  • Spoon
  • Paper towel
  • Knife
  • Gas or electric range
  • Plastic bag
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup whole-wheat flour (or simply use 1 ½ cup all-purpose flour and omit whole-wheat flour)
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt or table salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 bone-in chicken breast halves, skinned
  • 2 bone-in chicken thighs, skinned
  • 2 chicken drumsticks, skinned
  • 1/4 cup peanut oil or vegetable oil
