Spanish II Semester 1 (v.RC – Spanish Around the World)

Recommended Grade Level: 9 - 12

This introductory course in the Spanish language exposes the student to the culture of various Spanish-speaking countries around the world. As students learn about the history, geography, music, arts, dance, literature and food habits of these different cultures, they build on their vocabulary and understanding of the Spanish language. Students study about the complex political relations that the United States has with each of these countries.

This course uses the English language to help the student learn the Spanish language. Students are provided with English translations and audio files so that they could learn new words & phrases – their meaning and pronunciation.Students learn these new words / phrases in the context of the culture they are studying.

Learners use the Spanish language to investigate, explain, and reflect on the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the cultures studied. Learners use the language to investigate, explain, and reflect on the relationship between the products and perspectives of the cultures studied.Learners build, reinforce, and expand their knowledge of other disciplines (history, geography, arts) while using the language to develop critical thinking and to solve problems creatively. Learners access and evaluate information and diverse perspectives that are available through the language and its cultures. Learners use the language to investigate, explain, and reflect on the concept of culture through comparisons of the cultures studied and their own.
