Course Overview:

This health and fitness course provides students with the knowledge and skills to analyze and decide ways to stay fit and healthy. Students will analyze the importance of nutrition, healthy eating, and the prevention of various communicable and non-communicable diseases and their role in the body's development. Students will also learn about developmental stages in humans. The students will also evaluate ways to stay safe and apply first aid procedures in cases of emergencies. In addition, they will learn about emotional and mental health, various associated disorders, and resources available to get help. Other topics covered include the harmful effects of the abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other substances and ways to prevent and manage addiction.

Section: Nutrition for a Healthy Life

In this section, you will learn about:

  • Lesson 1: Food Groups

In this lesson, you will learn about the different food groups, essential macronutrients and micronutrients, and learn how to make healthy food choices. This lesson will help you assess your personal health practices and overall health status. You will learn how to formulate an effective long-term personal health plan and how to implement strategies and monitor progress in achieving this personal health goal.

  • Lesson 2: Nutrients and Minerals

In this lesson, you will learn about the types of micronutrients, the need for vitamins and minerals, good food sources, various deficiency disorders and phytonutrients. You will also learn about various varieties of food. This lesson will help you compare personal eating habits with widely accepted guidelines related to nutritional value and understand the effectiveness of health-related decisions. 

  • Lesson 3: Nutrition - Growth and Development

In this lesson, you will learn about nutrition during the lifespan of a human and the impact of biological sex and the activity of nutritional needs. 

  • Lesson 4: Nutritional Plans

This lesson will teach you how to plan healthy meals, various food allergies, food intolerances, and special diets and supplements. 

This lesson will help you to learn how to create a long-term personal health plan and make decisions about the behaviors to avoid or reduce health risks to yourself and others.

This lesson will explain the importance of hydration and making healthy drink choices to stay healthy. The lesson also explains the advantages and disadvantages of various common drink choices.

At the end of this lesson, you will understand why abstinence from sexual activity is the only method that is 100% effective in preventing STDs, the sexual transmission of HIV or acquired immune deficiency syndrome and the emotional trauma associated with adolescent sexual activity. You will be able to use a decision-making model to make a sexual health-related decision and prevent STDs.

  • Lesson 5: Reproductive health

In this lesson, you will learn about different reproductive system diseases and cancers of the reproductive system. After this lesson, you will be able to use a decision-making process to analyze when it is necessary to seek help with or leave an unhealthy situation associated with reproductive system illness.

In this section, you will learn about:

  • Lesson 1: Personal Hygiene, Basic First Aid and CPR

In this lesson, you will learn about the Basic First Aid Kit, the technique to perform CPR in case of an emergency and personal hygiene. The lesson also teaches about maintaining eye, ear and teeth health in humans. The lesson focuses on developing proficiency in psychomotor skills used for life support, including hands-on CPR, abdominal thrusts for choking victims and using an AED. The lesson also allows you to analyze healthy personal hygiene behaviors and make informed decisions. 

  • Lesson 2: Preventing Injuries

In this lesson, You will learn about various protective equipment that can be used to prevent injuries and some common sports and travel injuries. The lesson encourages learners to use safety equipment during various activities and promotes safe driving experiences. The student analyzes the relationship between unsafe behaviors and injuries and personal health.

In this lesson, you will learn about the health information available online, reliable and reputable online sources for health and health product-related information, dangers associated with the internet and ways to protect private information. 

  • Lesson 4: Violence and gangs

In this lesson, you will learn about the causes and effects of violence, especially domestic violence, and why people join gangs. You will also learn why violence and being a gang member are bad and how these can be prevented. The students will be able to evaluate the consequences of violence and getting involved in the gangs on themselves, their families and the community. They will also learn to use communication skills in order to resolve conflict and diffuse unhealthy behaviors in situations like abuse and violence. Students will be able to demonstrate conflict resolution skills to avoid potentially violent situations.

  • Lesson 5: Community Health and Emergency Preparedness

This lesson covers the basics of community and public health, various resources for community health and emergency preparedness plans at various levels. The lesson also covers the ways to deal with various natural disasters. In this lesson, you will learn how to improve personal and community health. You will also learn about the steps that should be taken to keep yourself and the people around you safe during various emergency situations and natural disasters.

  • Lesson 6: Sexual harassment, peer pressure and bullying

In this lesson, you will learn about the problems and effects of sexual harassment and assault, and peer pressure and bullying. You will also learn about preventing sexual harassment and assault and ways to overcome peer pressure and bullying. After this lesson, you will be able to use effective communication skills to prevent and report sexual harassment. You will be able to demonstrate effective peer resistance, negotiation, and collaboration skills to avoid potentially violent situations.

  • Lesson 3: Stress and Grief

In this lesson, you will learn about stress and grief and the coping skills to manage emotions associated with them. After this lesson, you will learn to set a goal to reduce life stressors in a health-enhancing way. You will be able to develop a personal stress management plan. 

  • Lesson 4: Mental Illnesses 

In this lesson, you will learn about the causes and effects of Mental illness. You will also learn about different types of mental health disorders and ways to prevent depression and suicide. You will understand the warning signs, causes/risk factors, prevention strategies, and treatment strategies for different mental health disorders, including but not limited to anxiety disorders, affective disorders, personality disorders, eating disorders, and attention disorders. At the end of this lesson, you will be able to analyze signs of depression, potential suicide, and other self-destructive behaviors and identify warning signs for suicide. You will understand how using suicide prevention resources such as the National Suicide Prevention Hotline reduces the likelihood of suicide.

  • Lesson 5: Mental health resources 

In this lesson, you will learn about various mental health resources available for people with mental illnesses and understand their importance. At the end of this lesson, you will be able to demonstrate how to ask for and offer support to enhance the mental health of yourself and others. You will also be able to demonstrate how to guide and support others to make positive health choices for mental health.

Section: Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs

In this section, you will learn about:

  • Lesson 1: Substance abuse

In this lesson, you will learn about various substances that are usually abused. You will also learn about the causes and effects of substance abuse. At the end of this lesson, you will be able to use a decision-making process to evaluate how the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs affects individuals, families, and society. 

  • Lesson 2: Alcohol Abuse and Addiction

In this lesson, you will learn about the causes and effects of alcohol abuse and addiction. After this lesson, you will be able to analyze how some health risk behaviors such as alcohol abuse can affect the likelihood of engaging in unhealthy behaviors. You will also be able to describe the interrelatedness of alcohol and other drugs to health problems. 

  • Lesson 3: Tobacco Addiction

In this lesson, you will learn about the causes and effects of tobacco addiction. You will also learn about the prevention and management of tobacco addiction. At the end of this lesson, you will be able to use refusal skills to avoid tobacco use and addiction. You will be able to analyze the role of individual responsibility for enhancing health and preventing tobacco addiction.

In this lesson, you will learn about the causes, effects and warning signs of drug addiction and abuse. After this lesson, you will be able to analyze how some health risk behaviors can influence the likelihood of engaging in unhealthy behaviors.

  • Lesson 5: Substance Abuse- Prevention and Treatment

In this lesson, you will learn about the ways to prevent and manage substance abuse. You will also learn about the resources available for substance abusers. You will be able to use effective coping strategies when faced with an array of social situations involving the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. You will learn how to present a persuasive solution to the problem of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use among youngsters. You will learn to design a drug-free message for a community beyond school.
