Course Overview:

This comprehensive health course provides students with essential knowledge and decision-making skills for a healthy lifestyle. Students will analyze aspects of emotional, social, and physical health and how these realms of health influence each other. Students will apply principles of health and wellness to their own lives. In addition, they will study behavior change and set goals to work on throughout the semester. Other topics of study include substance abuse, safety and injury prevention, environmental health, and consumer health.

Unit 1: Health Choices

In this section you will be learning about health and wellness. By the end of this section you should be able to do the following:

  • Interpret the World Health Organization’s definition of health
  • Contrast the leading causes of death between the 1900s and today
  • Examine the purpose and goals of Healthy People initiative
  • Explain the difference between controllable and non-controllable risk factors
  • Demonstrate what risk factors and health habits are and how they affect the individual
  • 2 Decision-Making Skills

In this section you will be learning about stages of change, decision making, and goal setting. By the end of this section you should be able to do the following:

  • Analyze the stages of change model and explain its importance
  • Apply the decision-making model to your life
  • Compose personal goals by using the action plan model 

Unit 2: Mental Health

In this section you will be learning about mental and emotional health. By the end of this section you should be able to do the following:

  • Distinguish between spiritual, emotional, and intellectual wellness
  • Analyze your own personality
  • Explain Maslow’s hierarchy of needs

In this section you will be learning about healthy ways to cope. By the end of this section you should be able to do the following:

In this section you will be learning about managing your time and your stress level. By the end of this section you should be able to do the following:

Unit 3: Social Health

In this section you will be learning how to prevent injuries and what steps to take in case of an accident. By the end of this section you should be able to do the following:
