Course Overview:

The study of music in 3rd Grade focuses on basic sight-reading skills, performing folk dances, and learning the history of folk music in America. Students will learn to play songs in 2/4 and 4/4 time signatures on the soprano recorder. Virtual games teach students to listen for changes in dynamics, count the number of beats, and recognize where measures start and end. By the end of the year, students will know how to read music and play the recorder. They will also know how to clog-dance and how to behave during a formal music concert. The goal of the 3rd Grade Music course is to learn musical performance, active listening skills, and mindfulness in a fun and relaxed environment.

Syllabus:

Module 1 - Sounds of Music

Objectives:

  • Learn and identify different instruments in music.
  • Know the difference between treble clef and bass clef.
  • Listen to and determine the difference between mezzo piano and mezzo forte.

Module 2 - Rhythm of Music

Objectives:

  • Understand the concept of rhythm.
  • Identify rhythmic patterns and musical forms.
  • Evaluate rhythm in everyday life.

  • Identify whole, half, quarter, and sixteenth notes and rests.

Module 3 - Learning Notes

Objectives:

  • Learn to read and write music on the grand staff.
  • Learn the notes of the treble clef and bass clef.
  • Learn fingering and proper technique for playing the Baroque-style soprano recorder.
  • Perform different pieces of music on the recorder.

Module 4 - Folk Music

Objectives:

  • Perform a simple folk melody.
